Read some of the things that go on as we approach the Airway. Some thoughts of what I think of as we consider the patient and the airway that needs to be addressed.
"It's not about the Tube and getting it in, it's the rush of CAN I DO THIS OR NOT, WILL I BE THE HERO, OR THE FAILURE?"

"I hardly intubate now with the Residents getting all my tubes. So I don't feel bad when I get an intubation without them. I need to stay sharp. Manikin practice helps, but I wish I had OR time like my anesthesiologist collegues. I need to be the expert. I am the ultimate backup to my students/residents for now.
The ultimate backup is not the Airtraq or the Glidescope. Nor the King LT or LMA. It's the skill I need to show and teach them in how to use the devices that will make them the eventual expert and not need me anymore"

"I wish this was all about patient care, and the patient's safety. But Pride makes me a better intubator. This same Pride will lead to failure if I have a failed airway and stink that day. I hope skill and preparedness is what leads to my success today"

"NIV in the form of Bipap helps me the best in my hospital. My residents don't understand that this device prevents intubations. Keeps the Tube away. But some patients don't need the Tube. They need to live without it for now. Some who get intubated, never get extubated. Some will never come off the Ventilator. We need to allow dignity. Perhaps we aren't allowed to intubate secondary to advanced directives, but we can allow life to last longer. The trick and dilemna is I do not want to prolong agony and indignity."Myself as Quotation Source
