Suction the airway will lead to better ventilation of the patient especially if there is copious amounts of frothy sputum, hemoptysis, aspiration of foodstuffs, or purulent secretions from the lung. You can even send off a specimen for sputum cultures. Do what you are taught. Don't dump the responsibility onto the respiratory therapist. You intubated the patient. You do it.
Pay attention to the Respiratory Therapists, ICU nurses, Anesthesiologists.
